Dog Training
How to train a puppy
The first 6 months is crucial
How to co-operate with the human species
Paying attention to you
"Get a pup before its eight weeks old, spend a lot of time with it during the next eight weeks"
Using your hands
When you take the pup to your home your hands cuddling and stoking will give the dog a sense of security. You must ensure that this relationship with your hands does not change. You need to be maintained as the pack leader.
Practise offering rewards to your dog with one hand whilst reaching for his colar or ear with the other.
Maintain consistent positions with your hands when performing commands like stay or sit.
Using your eyes
Eye contact similar to a wolf pack is used to keep order. The alpha animals both male and female use it to maintain leadership. Initiate eye contact and offer a command to ensure it is followed.
Using your voice
Your voice is one of the major influences on your puppies behaviour. Compare this to a cat that seemingly is not affected by your voice.
- Keep a low steady voice
- Happy voice when praising your pup
- Train your pup to respond to your tone
Using the leash
Your dog will spend a considerable amount of time attached to a leash - use this as a communication tool. Many communitees have laws about dogs being on leashes.
- Do not be rough and inconsistent
- Do not allow your pup to drag you to where he wants to go
- Train your pup to respond to your tone
